Finistère is France's leading maritime department, with over 2,200 km of coastline. Maritime activities as a whole play a key role here, both from an economic point of view (fisheries, shipbuilding, transport, seaweed, marine renewable energies, etc.) and in terms of sport and leisure activities, not forgetting tourism. It's also a land of nautical excellence, where over the years a network of centres of excellence has been built up, fostering the emergence of some very promising young talent: the Finistère ocean racing centre, the Brittany surfing hope centre, the France and sailing hope centres, etc.

The Department is working to develop all aspects of water sports, making them accessible to as many people as possible, thanks in particular to the expertise that the region has acquired and the structures that have been put in place. Offshore racing in particular is a key issue for Finistère. This sector generates a large number of jobs and, above all, a great deal of passion and admiration. It reflects positive values - innovation, commitment, hard work, performance and effort - that can inspire us all. The ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE - Brest is a perfect illustration of this. The first single-handed round-the-world Ultim race, with a course rounding the 3 capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn), it will bring together the best skippers in the Ultim 32/23 Class aboard state-of-the-art multihulls. These races are bound to impress for the human and technological challenge they represent.
